Case Study

AutoStore Integration

Arvato SCM UK Ltd is part of the global Arvato network, a division of the Bertelsmann Group.

In 2023, the company employed 460 people at its Hams Hall Distribution Centre in Coleshill and generated over £67 million in revenue. Arvato continues to grow by managing the full supply chain for its clients with expertise in e‑commerce, omnichannel distribution, classic logistics, and transport solutions.

In 2024, Arvato initiated a major AutoStore integration project to expand its existing system. The goal was to increase capacity beyond the original 90,000 storage locations served by 130 R5 RedLine robots. This upgrade was required to support a new customer, the technical athletic apparel brand Lululemon.

The AutoStore integration was completed on time, on budget, and exceeded expectations. Hills Electrical Group helped us boost capacity and efficiency with zero disruption.

The AutoStore Integration Solution

Hills Electrical Group partnered with Nomis Installation to deliver the mechanical and electrical design for the extended AutoStore system.

As part of this AutoStore integration, the team delivered a major capacity upgrade by adding 25,956 new storage locations and strengthening the system with a 125A power distribution board, 35 R5 RedLine robots, seven carousel ports, six battery chargers and twelve conveyor ports. To ensure a consistent and premium brand experience, the team also vinyl‑wrapped every robot and port with Arvato’s branding.

Additionally, the engineers carried out all mechanical and electrical work with precision, and they completed the full installation and testing in just 210 man‑days. As a result, the project progressed smoothly from start to finish and demonstrated the team’s ability to deliver complex automation upgrades efficiently and reliably.

Results of the AutoStore Integration

Hills Electrical Group delivered the full AutoStore integration on time and on budget.

Following the expansion, the facility now offers 115,956 storage locations supported by 165 R5 RedLine robots. This increased capacity is scheduled to become operational in Q1 2025.

The integration significantly enhances Arvato’s ability to support new clients, boost throughput, and scale fulfilment operations efficiently.
