It opened its first vertical farm opened in 2019 in Burton-on-Trent, providing 3,200 m2 of growing space – one of the largest vertical farms in the UK.
The facility produces a wide range of short leaf products, such as rocket, via a stacked, biosecure, climate-controlled and fully automated system.

Hills Electrical Group developed an ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system) to precisely retrieve and store plants and integrate them easily into the uniformed vertical environment of the farm.
The ASRS offers excellent flexibility to customise operations with cutting edge configurations serving any strategy based on growing process, crop type, and available space.
Hills Electrical Group delivered the solution on time and on budget and this farm was used as the pilot to prove the concept of vertical farming including optimum lighting, hydration, ambient temperature and growing times.
In 2022, using the experience gained from the pilot, Fischer Farms built the largest vertical farm in the world. The 4-acre site in Norfolk houses 25,000 m2 of growing space – to supply leaf salad, leafy herbs and other fresh produce to UK supermarkets and other customers every day.
